Psychologists

Hal Shigley, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist Hal Shigley, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist. Hal Shigley received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Georgia in 1973.  He has taught at the university level, been the Clinical Director of two regional TEACCH Centers, a consulting psychologist in the Outreach Department at Murdoch Center, and has been in private practice for the past seventeen years with Shigley Family Services.  He takes a behavioral approach in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, LD/ADHD, and anxiety disorders.  He also works with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders including Aspergers’ Disorder.
Susan Smith, M.A., H.S.P. Susan Smith, M.A., H.S.P. Susan is a licensed psychological associate and health services provider with 17 years experience in pediatric psychology. Susan earned her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Master's degree in Psychology with a concentration in developmental disabilities from East Carolina University. There, she also assisted in research and taught introductory psychology courses.

Susan has extensive experience in performing psychological, educational, and neuro-developmental assessments on young children through college age. She served 13 years as a staff psychologist and team leader for the Children's Developmental Services Agency, where she earned her Infant / Toddler Certification and specialized in working with children ages birth to five. She has special interests in autism spectrum disorders, atypical development, learning disabilities, executive dysfunction, language disorders, and literacy. Susan believes in maximizing each student's potential by better understanding his/her unique learning style.
Catherine Jones, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist Catherine Jones, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist. Catherine Jones received her Ph.D. in Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Memphis, then completed a predoctoral internship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  She stayed at UNC’s Center for Development and Learning for a postdoctoral fellowship and then as a faculty member before coming to Shigley Family Services.  Areas of expertise include child development, developmental disabilities, and assessment and treatment of preschoolers.
Caroline Hexdall, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist. Caroline Hexdall, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist. Caroline Hexdall is a Licensed Psychologist and a Nationally Certified School psychologist.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, completed an internship at the Children’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Her areas of interest and specialty include psychological assessment of learning and other problems, child and family therapy, and assessment of developmental disabilities including Autism. 
Karen D. Schulze, M.A., L.P.A. Karen D. Schulze, M.A., L.P.A. Karen D. Schulze earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1988, as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology.  She has experience working as a school psychologist with preschool and elementary school children, a psychologist in a multidisciplinary evaluation clinic, and has been with Shigley Family Services since 1994.  She enjoys working with children of all ages with learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism.  Karen enjoys interacting with children and is committed to helping parents understand their child’s strengths and weaknesses, offering education and support to all families.

Clinical Social Worker

Danielle Tanaka, LCSW. Danielle Tanaka, LCSW. Danielle is a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years experience in the fields of social work, education, & coaching. She holds both a bachelors and a master's degree in Social Work. In addition, Danielle has been certified as a Pre-primary Montessori teacher, a Family & Divorce Mediator, a Hypnotherapist, and a Qualified Supervisor for Montessori teachers in training, social work students seeking bachelors and master's degrees, and graduates seeking social work licensure.

Danielle has practiced clinical and forensic social work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in a variety of settings including not-for-profits, child/adolescent & adult crisis/stabilization hospital units, the Broward County, FL courts, and private practice. As a lifestyle coach Danielle specializes in life transitions, stress management, and wellness. Her areas of specialty also include family counseling, women's issues, parenting, divorce, substance abuse, emotional/behavioral issues in children & adolescents.

Speech/Language Pathologists

Nicole Caldwell, M.A., CCC-SLP. Nicole Caldwell, M.A., CCC-SLP. Nicole Caldwell received her Bachelor's Degree in Communication Disorder from North Carolina State University and her Master's Degree in Communication Disorders from the Appalachian State University. She has served the pediatric population in a variety of settings to include public schools, developmental day schools, private clinics, the Cumberland County Children's Developmental Services Agency, and pediatric rehabilitation facilities. Nicole also has extensive experience serving children in the natural environment to include daycare, home, and preschool.

Nicole's background includes evaluating and treating children with Autism, Asperger's Disorder, Apraxia, articulation/phonological disorders, feeding disorders and delays, and language disorders. Nicole specializes in oral motor/feeding issues and assessment and intervention for children with difficulty learning to read. Nicole has been trained in the Beckman approach to oral motor intervention and she recently received training in the LIPS program for treating children with difficulties in reading.

Stephanie Jarrett, M.A., CF-SLP.

Stephanie Jarrett, M.A., CF-SLP. Stephanie Jarrett received her Master's Degree in Communication Disorders from Appalachian State University. She has served the pediatric population in multiple settings including public schools, developmental day schools, the Raleigh Child Developmental Services Agency and private clinics. Stephanie also has experience in serving children in the natural environment including daycare, home and preschool. Stephanie's background includes evaluating and treating children with Autism, Asperger's Disorder, Apraxia, articulation/phonological disorders, feeding disorders and language disorders.
Kathleen Neff, M.S., CCC-SLP. Kathleen Neff, M.S., CCC-SLP. Kathleen received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and her Master's degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. With 13 years of experience, Kathleen has worked in a number of settings including the public school system, developmental day centers, private practice, early intervention and research. Areas of interest and expertise include early identification and treatment of infants, toddlers and preschoolers, especially those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She has also received training in the PROMPT Method for treating apraxia and articulation/phonological disorders and in the Hanen program for teaching arents and professionals ways to facilitate a child's language development.

Occupational Therapists

Vicki DeMaster, M.S., OTR/L

Vicki K. DeMaster, M.S., OTR/L. Vicki DeMaster received her B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin and M.S. degree in Special Education from North Carolina State University.  She has over 30 years of experience working as an Occupational Therapist, the majority of which have been working with children within clinic, school/preschool, and community-based programs.  Vicki taught pediatrics courses in UNC’s Occupational Therapy Graduate Program and has given a variety of presentations to professionals and parents.  Her primary professional interests include working with young children with Autism, sensory processing/sensory integrative disorders and learning disabilities.  The focus of her therapy is on fine motor and visual motor concerns, and she uses a collaborative approach to therapeutic intervention with families, caregivers, and fellow professionals. 
Teresa Fortner, M.O.T., OTR/L Teresa Fortner, M.O.T., OTR/L. Teresa Fortner received her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from Ohio State University.  She has been a practicing pediatric occupational therapist for 4-1/2 years with preschool and school age children.  Her areas of expertise include sensory integration dysfunction with formal training in the Wilbarger Protocols, as well as a licensed practitioner for Therapeutic Listening. 
Emilie Quigley, B.S., OTR/L Emilie Quigley, B.S., OTR/L. Emilie Quigley graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2000, and has been practicing as a licensed occupational therapist for the past 5 years.  She has worked in a private clinic setting and in a preschool setting for visually impaired children.  She has training in Therapeutic Listening, and has special interests in the area of sensory integration, Autism, and visually impaired children. 
Kathy Trocinski, M.S., OTR/L Kathy Trocinski, M.S., OTR/L. Kathy Trocinski graduated in 1990 from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy.  Her 15 years of experience have been primarily in the area of outpatient and school-based pediatrics.  Her practice has also included home health, inpatient pediatrics, and neonatal intensive care.  Areas of expertise include sensory processing disorders, oral motor and feeding issues, fine motor and visual perceptual difficulties, and handwriting. 
Tonya Bradshaw, M.S., OTR/L. Tonya Bradshaw, M.S., OTR/L. Tonya Bradshaw received her B.S. degree in Family and Child Development, with a concentration in Human Services, from Virginia Tech and her M.S. degree in Occupational Therapy fro East Carolina University. Her areas of interest include sensory integration dysfunction, Autism and learning disabilities, visual impairments, visual perceptual/motor difficulties and physical disabilities. She has worked with chuldren in a number of clinical settings including a child development center, public school system, day treatment center designed for children who are developmentally disabled and pediatric outpatient services within a private practice.

Administrative Staff

Brenda Vath Brenda Vath Brenda has over 18 years of administrative experience. She is originally from Illinois, but has been in North Carolina for 19 years. She loves spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren!
